Jack watches Eliot's face as he says they assured us we wouldn't need to use that kind of magic and guesses by his shift in mood that there's second half that Eliot isn't saying. Something like but we did anyway or they were wrong. He can't be entirely sure. Eliot had said he hadn't had need for battle magic, so he was either lying or his shift in mood is about the criticism to his schooling, which is...fair, he supposes.
